Along with all those fabulous bell bottoms and goldfish-toting heels, another creation of those very early ‘70s were the seeds that would grow to become the G-Body chassis from General Motors, manufactured from 1982-1988. When the wheelbase of GM’s A-Body line was first stretched beginning with the 1969-1972 Pontiac Grand Prix and 1970-1972 Chevrolet Monte Carlo, engineers were seeking improved ride characteristics with every additional inch.
When GM officially introduced its new front-wheel drive A-Body platform for the 1982 model year, those cars still built on the rear-wheel-drive platform were designated as G-Bodies. As auto manufacturers were struggling their way out of the Malaise Era, GM’s new G-Body lineup brought a breath of fresh air to an industry choking on idiosyncratic body styles and clean air mandates.
New body styles coupled with V8 engines capable of churning out modest amounts of performance with somewhat clean air, allowed these vehicles to be much more appealing to the American public. Nameplates such as Malibu, El Camino, and Monte Carlo continued to find housing in the bulk of garages around the nation, and as performance increased, they became even more desirable.
The classic styling of this generation of GM vehicles built from 1982-1988 has resonated with many enthusiasts. Now, with the performance potential of today’s powertrains, those leg-warmer-wearing, rear-wheel-drive cars can live up to their true potential. Even better, companies such as BMR Suspension have embraced this generation of G-bodies and created a line of products to also improve the vehicle’s handling characteristics.
The latest offering from BMR Suspension is these totally-tubular upper and lower control arms for 1978-1987 GM G-Body vehicles. Each control arm is manufactured from 1.25-inch and 1.5-inch DOM tubing and utilizes laser-cut 3/16-inch mounting plates. Both upper and lower control arms feature low-deflection, internally-fluted Delrin bushings with grease fittings for quiet operation. Delrin bushings provide a much more solid feel compared to the stock rubber bushings used in the OEM control arms.
These improved upper and Lower control arms eliminate deflection, greatly improving steering feel and response in both normal and performance driving situations. BMR upper control arms are engineered to provide two additional degrees of positive caster for increased high-speed stability. BMR’s Lower control arms provide four additional degrees of positive caster (two degrees from the uppers and two degrees from the lowers), allowing up to 6 degrees of total positive caster over the stock configuration.
The upper arms also have revised cross-shaft geometry and a shorter overall length, requiring less shim stack to achieve negative camber on lowered cars, or race and pro touring vehicles with aggressive alignments. BMR’s lower control arms feature a CNC-machined ball joint cup with additional clearance for late-model brake kits. BMR upper control arms are available with either a standard ball joint or a tall ball joint.
BMR’s new control arms for G-Body vehicles are designed for street performance, drag race, and performance-handling applications. All BMR Suspension products are available in red and black hammer-tone powder coat finishes for long-lasting good looks. Installation time is about 4-5 hours and as with all BMR products, the control arms are proudly made in the USA! Check out BMR’s website for more info and to order some better-performing control arms for your 1982-1988 G-Body GM vehicle.
